YTB Travel Chronicles

Because of our affiliation with the YTB Travel Network , we were able to afford to spend several weeks visiting our son and his family in Darmstadt, Germany, last May.  During the visit, we had the distinct pleasure of touring the town of Rudesheim, on the Rhine River.  Rudesheim is a fine place to enjoy the hospitality of the German people.  The town boasts many attractions for the traveler.  It is a large depot for several different river cruises, appropriate for the time and opportunity any traveler might have.  We enjoyed a 2-hour boat ride to the North, which included several castles and sites along the way.  Additionally, the lunch menu, aboard, provided traditional fare that was excellent and varied.  All this was reasonably priced and conveniently accessed. 

Next on our tour, we took the cable-car ride up the mountain to the Niederwald Monument.  The Monument was constructed as a memorial to the German people after WWI.  The cable-car ride is well worth the time to ride suspended over the river valley and the vineyards that produce the famous “Rhine Wine.”    The photo, above, is taken looking SW over the river valley from the Monument.  The wheel is a directional compass pointing to the great cities of Europe.

Finally, we were able to spend the remainder of the afternoon in the village, shopping and strolling the narrow streets of the Allstadt (Old City), or Stadmitte (City Center).  A rest stop in a restaurant included some singing and dancing to a traditional “OOM-PA-PA” band - We do know how to polka!    

All-in-all, our day’s sojourn in Rudesheim proved to be one that we will fondly remember.  If you’re ever in the neighborhood, I know that you’ll be pleased to spend a relaxing day in the Rhine River city of Rudesheim.
